Web-based Yahoo! Messenger released

..
Yahoo!'s answer to web-based Google Talk is now live on the tubes: Yahoo! Messenger for the Web lets you chat, download-free, on the Y! network right inside the web browser.

Let's cut to the chase. Web-based Y! Messenger takes the desktop app experience in the browser to a whole new level with some killer features: "so-and-so is typing" notification while your chat buddy is composing a message (Campfire, you need this), slick tab title scrolling of a new message when Web Messenger is in a background tab, online per-contact message history, a tabbed interface for multiple chats and an animated selection of Y!'s classically fun and expressive emoticons. Also, Y! Messenger plays nice with Windows Live Messenger, too.

It was on Yahoo! Messenger that I fell in love with chatting back in the late 90's, so I'd be lying if I said Messenger for the Web didn't make my heart skip a beat or two tonight. Browser support is impressive, too: you can get your web-based Y! chat on in Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera AND Safari. My Y!-loyal pal over in IT lockdown is literally throwing a party over this, she hasn't had her favorite instant messenger at the office for so long. Sign in with your Yahoo! account over at http://web.im (nice domain, Yahoo) to give it a spin.

Convert an image to an icon with ConvertIcon

..

Web site ConvertIcon quickly converts a PNG into an ICO (icon) file online, then lets you download the results.

This is a great tool to have bookmarked, especially if you're at all interested in creating custom icons for you desktop. Personally, it came in very handy when I was converting my (admittedly crappy) Lifehacker Code images into icons, since finding a free, simple PNG-to-ICO converter for Windows turned out to be a pain in the ass.

Translate text and webpages- Altavista Babel Fish

AltaVista Bable Fish Translation

http://babelfish.altavista.com/

AltaVista Babel Fish Translation enables you to translate short passages of text or entire Web sites among 19 pairs of languages.

As an automatic translator, Babel Fish works best when the text you wish to translate uses proper grammar. Slang, misspelled words, poorly placed punctuation and complex or lengthy sentences can all cause a page to be translated incorrectly. Expect Babel Fish to allow you to grasp the general intent of the original, not to produce a polished translation.

To Translate Your Own Text

  • Type or paste text into the “Translate a block of text” text box.
  • Select the language pair from the list (for example, English to French).
  • Click the Translate button.

Babel Fish translates text up to about 150 words at a time

To enter special characters
To enter accented or Russian characters, click the World Keyboard link. An on-screen “virtual keyboard” will appear. You can add characters to the text box by either clicking on the keys or typing with your physical keyboard. The World Keyboard link turns your physical keyboard into the international keyboard of your choice. To return your physical keyboard to normal operation, just click the close box on the virtual keyboard. After you close the keyboard, press Control-k to use it again.

Tips
To enter accents, click first the accent and then the character it appears with. To type capital letters, click the Shift key and then the letter.
Be sure your Windows control panel keyboard is set to English. The World Keyboard does not run on Macintosh computers.

To Translate a Web Page

  • Enter the address of the page you wish to translate into the “Translate a Web page” text box.
  • Select the language pair from the list (for example, German to English).
  • Click the Translate button.

Babel Fish translates individual Web pages up to 10K. When you click a link, the linked page is also automatically translated.

I will not show my IP address to anyone of you!!!!

http://www.anonymouse.org - This site is best if you do not want your IP address detected while visiting a website. I am still not sure how helpful it is but I try and use this when I am visiting websites which allow for password hacking so that my ip address is not on display amongst hackers atleast.

This link will also help you if you are working in office and your office has installed a cyber software for disallowing access to certain links. You can actually visit the links BANNED in your office.

Just go to this site and type in the box the site you wish to visit and YOUR THEREEEE…Go great guns friends. Now you have got a CHEAT TOOL….

This is what the website has to say. Its sure to make your concept and fear right in place. “Many mice surf the web under the illusion that their actions are private and anonymous. Unfortunately, it isn’t so. Every time you visit a site for a piece of cheese, you leave a calling card that reveals where you’re coming from, what kind of computer you have, and other details. And many cats keep logs of all your visits, so that they can catch you! This service allows you to surf the web without revealing any personal information. It is fast, it is easy, and it is free!”

Yahoo, MSN, ICQ, GTalk - Chat without the messenger

Meebo

http://www.meebo.com - Another site for office users.

Has your office banned chats like Yahoo, MSN, AIM or ICQ, Jabber or GTalk? Of course since they have banned then the system engineers have even not installed these chat clients on your machine right? No problem. Just visit ‘Meebo’ and you have all these chat clients opening inside the same browser. Just type your user name and password like you would do under the chat client you wish to chat with.

Once logged in, the page refreshes and inside the internet window itself, you will be able to see your chat client and chat. Chat windows open inside the browser itself so you have complete privacy and what’s more it can’t be tracked by the office cyber software.. yipeeeee.

I must say this is the greatest website. Above all no need to download and install the particular messengers. What do you say. Isn’t it a noble idea. Terriffic. I just can’t explain in words. Now chatting for all.

Everything is not yet FREE on the NET!

https://mediamax.streamload.com

There are a lot of websites providing online storage space for files, videos, music. Most of them give a trail 15 day membership after which things are chargeable. But there’s this site which claims free online storage space of 25 GB. Sounds unbelievable – in fact, you don’t need to believe it because I found a lot of loopholes while reviewing this site so I wanted to make other users aware of it all before you register and fall in the trap.

The loopholes are as below:

• The site is ambiguous about its price plans and features. There are 2 registration pages at different locations, each showcasing different Price Plans and Features.
https://www.streamload.com/Account/CreateNewAccount.asp?userName=xyz
https://mediamax.streamload.com/home/pricing.aspx

The first link has 5 plans with different prices and the second link has 3 plans which are not the same as any of the 5 previously mentioned ones.

• On registration, the site doesn’t actually provide 25GB but just 500 MB space. Moreover, there’s a restricted bandwidth too. At the same point of time, the file size limit is 25 MBs, so you cannot really share Videos as claimed by the site on its Homepage.

After coming across all these discrepancies, no one would really trust the genuineness of the site and for that matter would anyone jeopardize the safety and security of his important files?

No doubt, the server is quite fast and the file management is also user friendly but then, you don’t really get what you want!
